The Technology

Our wireless backbone brings our network into each area where we then connect our wireless access point to offer service to clients within that area. We have begun upgrading the backbone links to ensure we have capacity for future demands. One of our primary links is running at full-duplex Gigabit speed. As emerging wireless technologies evolve to the point they are reliable enough to trust, we have the ability to plug in new radio cards and update software to take advantage of them.

Almost every site now has our 5th Generation wireless access points. With this new equipment. The customer link to our access points can be as high as 300Mbits.

Our existing fourth generation clients are already taking advantage of the network upgrades that we have been working on. As we continue the upgrades these clients will continue to see improved capacity and network availabilty. With this generation of equipment, the customer link to our system will typically be maintained at speeds of up to 54Mbits while our custom routers control the amount of traffic based upon your account type. All of our packages are many times faster than rural dialup speeds, which seldom reach 28k. Burstable means that you can get short bursts of speed much higher than the sustained limit, allowing most web pages to load very quickly, or smaller emails to be sent or received very quickly. The bandwidth limit really only comes into effect on sustained data flow.

All our sites have battery backup that will provide standby power for at least 4 to 5 hours after a power failure. The entire network is constantly monitored and will automatically message someone within minutes, if a serious problem or outage is detected.

Our hotspots are based on special low power embedded boards with wireless network cards housed inside weatherproof enclosures near the antennas. These are powered by a battery that is kept charged with a high efficiency switching power supply. The battery can provide about 16 hours of run-time after an AC power failure, although many sites have double the battery capacity extending run times to 30+ hours after a local hydro failure.
